NEW YORK, March 3 (Reuters) – Maintaining healthy levels of a peptide called glutathione could greatly play a “crucial” role in slowing down the progression of AIDS, according to researchers. And of course, you should know that a low level of glutathione in the body system would greatly make the body vulnerable to any forms of infection which include HIV AIDS.

“HIV-positive people with low glutathione levels (also) are much less likely to survive past three years than people with a high level or normal glutathione levels,” concludes Dr. Leonard Herzenberg, a faculty geneticist. of Medicine of the University of Medicine.

Glutathione (GSH) is a molecule involved in a variety of normal cellular activities, including cell division and cleansing of intracellular toxins. But a low level of glutathione “effectively reduces cell survival, alters T cell functions (of the immune system) and increases HIV replication” in HIV-infected cells, according to researchers.

They added that GSH level measurements can be an accurate marker of AIDS progression.

Traditionally, doctors have assessed the status of HIV-infected patients by measuring the levels of CD4 cells, which are part of the immune system. CD4 counts of 1000 cells per milliliter (ml) of blood are normal in healthy and uninfected individuals. These numbers are declining rapidly in people with HIV infection. CD4 levels below 200 cells/ml would leave AIDS patients vulnerable to a number of life-threatening opportunistic infections.

The Herzenberg team divided 204 HIV-positive (but asymptomatic) patients into two groups. They administered a placebo to one group of glutathione and to the other group.

Ninety-nine of the 204 subjects in the Stanford study had an initial CD4 count of fewer than 200 cells/ml. Most of the 99 people who received a placebo (and therefore maintained low levels of glutathione) died during the three-year study period.

“On the other hand,” said Herzenberg, “out of the 28 people who started the study with a low CD4 count but maintained normal glutathione levels, 23 survived, in other words, about 80% of these people survived, even though their CD4 count indicated their survival was unlikely. ”

Herzenberg believes that “glutathione levels count for patient survival”, and the study indicates that clinical measurements of these levels “appear as a powerful criterion for predicting survival in HIV infection”.

And Herzenberg believes that increasing GSH (glutathione) levels can help AIDS patients stay healthier longer. The study “provides the first clear indication that GSH deficiency plays a central role in determining how quickly the final stages of HIV disease progression.”

Glutathione benefits

According to Herzenberg, clinical trials evaluating the impact of glutathione administration on the long-term survival of HIV patients are the next logical step in research on the subject.

We investigated the effects of glutathione on the recurrence of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in chronically infected macrophages, a well-known reservoir of virus in the body. We have seen that exogenous GSH inhibits p24gag protein production as well as the infectious effects of the virus.

This is due to the dramatic reduction in the formation and release of viral particles from chronically infected cells (macrophages or lymphocytes), as well as the envelope rich in essential glycoprotein and atrazine disulfide bonds, thus reducing the selection. It is potentially sensitive to the effects of a reducing agent such as GSH.

Global data suggest that GSH may interfere with subsequent stages of virus transmission. This is consistent with data obtained from cells exposed to herpes virus type 1 virus (DNA virus) or Sendai (RNA virus), suggesting that GSH replication is associated with selective inhibition of envelope glycoproteins.

These results indicate the potential role of GSH in combatting or fighting Virus related diseases.

Symptoms of HIV

Well, the symptoms of the HIV Virus come in three different stages. If someone with the Virus fails to manage or treat it early, this may result in different symptoms as the Virus advances in stages.

The First stage:

  • Acute HIV infection

Most people are not immediately aware that they are infected with HIV but may have symptoms shortly thereafter. Your body’s immune system usually starts to fight 2-6 weeks after a virus infection.

This is called acute retroviral syndrome or primary HIV infection. And once you start noticing any of the below symptoms, please do not hesitate to go see a doctor have an HIV test. Once tested positive, it’s highly recommended that you begin treatment.

The symptoms in this stage are:

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Aching muscles
  • Sore throat
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • A red rash that doesn’t itch, usually on your torso

The Second Stage:

  • Asymptomatic

This stage where the body’s immune system must have lost its battle to the Virus usually refers to as asymptomatic or clinical latent period and it usually lasts for about ten (10) years.

During this time, untreated HIV will kill CD4 T cells and destroy your immune system. With a normal blood test, your doctor can check how many you have.

But note that normal CD4 cells are from 450 to 1,400 cells per microliter. However, without treatment, the number of CD4 cells will greatly decrease and you will be more susceptible to other infections.

The third stage:

  • AIDS
